No glossy sales pitch: Groundswell hopes to be transparent in aim, thorough in attempt, and humble in approach. Artists must always evolve but rarely is there time to be fully aware and in control of that process.
So here is that time. Here are the facilitators to support you. Here is the international peer group selected for what they can learn from each other. Here you are, with the time and environment to shape your next step.
You will be presented an array of theories and practices and the chance to strengthen or discard your own. The days will be long. You will get lost and exhausted.
There are no easy answers. Groundswell is the space to finally ask the real questions. We are a hub between where you’ve been and where you want to go: the space to break habits and make your method.

ACTING - MOVEMENT
Stephen has performed nationally and internationally with Dell’Arte International, where he has been a company member for over a decade. Stephen has also performed with Deborah Slater Dance, Tanztheater Heidelberg, Theater of Northern Greece, Oktana Dance Theater, Scott Wells and Dancers, and Shotgun Players. Stephen is the Head of Movement and Physical Theater, in the Master of Fine Arts program, at the American Conservatory Theater in San Francisco. Stephen has taught Physical Theater in various Masters Programs including; Yale School of Drama, New York University (Italy), Brown University/Trinity Repertory Theater, and the University of Connecticut. Stephen has Choreographed/Designed movement for various theaters including the American Conservatory Theater, Trinity Repertory Company, Long Wharf Theatre, and Shakespeare Santa Cruz. Stephen is a member of the Society of Directors and Choreographers, the Network of Ensemble Theaters, and a graduate of the Dell’ Arte International School of Physical Theater and California Institute of the Arts.
ACTING - DIRECTION
Christopher is the chair of the Theatre Department at Utah Valley University and the executive producer for Robert Redford's Sundance Summer Theatre in Sundance, Utah. Chris has studied with the Royal Shakespeare Company, Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre (London,) Steppenwolf Theatre Company, Second City Chicago, and Theatre Biomechanics (Italy and Austria). He has directed for the Utah Shakespeare Festival, Hale Center Theatre Orem, Hale Centre Theatre West Valley, Utah Valley University, Northcoast Repertory Theatre, Sundance Summer Theatre and Brigham Young University. He recently won the 2013 National Outstanding Director Award from the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival for his production of Vincent at Brixton. He has produced and traveled eight productions to the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Chris has a BA and PhD from Brigham Young University, and an MFA from the University of Exeter (UK.)
ACTING - DIRECTION
After founding her acting school, Voice Factory, in the San Francisco Bay Area, Taylor directed, cast, coached and taught at its four campuses for over fifteen years. She is now Artistic Director for Stray Dog Presents, a theatre production company in San Miguel De Allende, Mexico for which she directs. Taylor has appeared -- as herself-- in several television reality shows in the US and Great Britain and has been featured on television and radio programs discussing the art of acting-- including an appearance on Oprah. Taylor has coached a number of celebrities and sports personalities and now lives full time in San Miguel where she heads up a theatre workshop for international students and teaches acting.

Jon Tracy works internationally as a director, playwright, designer and educator. He is the recipient of the Kennedy Center Meritorious Achievement Award, fifteen Arty Awards, The Elly Award, The Bay Area Critics Circle Award and is a grant recipient from Theatre Bay Area and the National Endowment for the Arts. He is the Co-Artistic Director of Groundswell, the Executive Director of The Lights Up Project, a proud member of Theatre Bay Area's Gender Parity Commission, and of SDC, the union for stage directors and choreographers. www.jontracy.com
Christopher Chen is a San Francisco based playwright whose works have been produced and developed at the American Conservatory Theater, Asian American Theater Company, Bay Area Playwrights Festival, Beijing Fringe, Berkeley Rep Ground Floor, Central Works, Crowded Fire, Cutting Ball Theater, Edinburgh Fringe, hotINK Festival, Impact Theatre, InterAct Theatre, Just Theatre, Lark Play Development Center, Magic Theatre, Playwrights Foundation, San Francisco Playhouse, Silk Road Rising, Sundance Theatre Lab, Theatre Mu, U.C. Berkeley/Zellerbach Playhouse and The Vineyard. Full length produced plays include Into the Numbers, The Hundred Flowers Project, Mutt, The Late Wedding, Caught and Aulis: An Act of Nihilism in One Long Act. Honors: Glickman Award; Rella Lossy Award; shortlist for the James Tait Black Award; nomination for the Steinberg Award; 2nd Place in the Belarus Free Theater International Playwriting Competition; PONY finalist; Jerome Finalist; the 2013 Paula Vogel Playwriting Award, through which he was playwright-in-residence at The Vineyard Theatre. Current commission: S.F. Playhouse. Chris is a graduate of U.C. Berkeley, and holds an M.F.A. in playwriting from S.F. State.
PLAYWRIGHTING - DIRECTION
Julie has received grants from the NEA, TCG, AT&T New Plays, the Rockefeller Foundation, the Alexander Gerbode Foundation, and the California Arts Commission for writing, directing, and inter-disciplinary arts. She has served on peer-panels for many of these organizations. Julie taught in the graduate programs at UCLA and USC, and is a proud alumna of New Dramatists, The Bay Area Playwrights Festival, and Alternate ROOTS. When her musical drama Ruby’s Bucket of Blood was optioned by Showtime and Whoopi Goldberg, Julie wrote the screenplay, which was made into a film starring Angela Bassett. It was the first of many scripts Julie has written for film and television. When a producer saw her production of Almost Asleep, Julie was hired to write the screenplay for Female Perversions starring Tilda Swinton, a film which went on to be nominated for the Grand Jury Prize at Sundance. Julie has written and directed for several hit television shows including Nashville, The Good Wife, Boss, Blue Bloods, The West Wing, ER, Numb3rs and most recently American Crime, where she is a Co-Executive Producer. Her television writing has been honored with a Prism Award and an Environmental Media Award from the Norman Lear Center. Her first television directorial effort, a documentary for Third Watch after 9/11, resulted in a George Foster Peabody Award.
Bridgette’s choreographic career began in 1999, during her time as an actor for the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, when on her off-season she was simultaneously dancing under the direction of David HoChoy: Former Rehearsal Director of the Martha Graham Dance Company and Artistic Director of Dance Kaleidoscope in Indianapolis. As cast member and trainer for the NYC Off-Broadway Show, and International Touring Cast of De La Guarda, she also co-choreographed: ‘Now and Then’ with Tai Dang of Newsweek Magazine NYC, and created ‘Beloved’ a one-woman Shakespeare movement piece for the Nova Danca Dance Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil. After returning from her aerial performances in Beijing for the 2008 Summer Olympic and Paralympic Games, she created ‘Le Petit Mort’ for DARB1718 the New Egyptian Cultural Center in Cairo, Egypt. Other credits include: ‘The Tempest,’ directed by Nancy Carlin; the Premier of Tanya Shaffer’s ‘The Fourth Messenger’ directed by Matt August; ‘HONK!’ Shakespeare Santa Cruz Holiday Show directed by Nancy Carlin; ‘Spring Break’ The Musical written by Sara Faith Alterman and directed by Jessica Heidt; Movement Consultant for ‘Of the Earth’ at Shotgun Players directed by Jon Tracy; ‘Charlotte’s Web’ directed by Nathan Cummings at Peninsula Youth Theatre, Mountain View; ‘Dick Wittington’ directed by Jane Karen at The New Wolsey Theatre in Ipswich, England, Opening celebrations for the Hilton at Tower Bridge, London and Head of Show Production for UneeQ Entertainment, Dubai, U.A.E. Bridgette returned to the United States in 2010. Most recently she choreographed ‘Be Still and I Will Return for You,’ a commissioned work for Liv Dance Collective; and San Jose State University’s production of ‘RENT’ directed by Buddy Butler. Bridgette has held Contemporary Master Classes in Buenos Aires, Sao Paulo, Tokyo, and London.
Linda McLean is a multi-award winning playwright from Scotland. Her plays include Every Five Minutes (BATCC Award); Any Given Day (Lessa Rossy Playwrighting Award); Strangers, Babies (Susan Smith Blackburn prize finalist); Shimmer (Herald Angel), One Good Beating (Best One Act Play); Riddance (Fringe First, Herald Angel); What Love Is; This Is Water; Uncertainty Files; Cold Cuts; Doch An Doris; Word For Word; and in 2012, Sex & God. Strangers, Babies (Fractures); Any Given Day (Un Jour Ou ‘Autre); The Uncertainty Files (Dossiers Incertidudes); Cold Cuts (Tranche Froide); What Love Is (Ce qu’aimer veut dire); Sex&God (Sex&God); and Every Five Minutes (Toutes les cinq minutes) have been translated into French. Other translations include Spanish, Turkish, Polish, Macedonian and Greek. Linda adapted Like Water for Chocolate, from the novel by Laura Esquivel, which was translated into Spanish; Olga from the Finnish play by Laura Ruohonen; and Le Problem, from the French play by Francois Begadeau. Linda has written plays for BBC Radio 4 and BBC Scotland, the last being Zombie Rule Number 9 in 2013. Linda is Chairwoman of the Playwrights’ Studio Scotland and has worked for the British Council in Mexico City, Teluca and Bogota. In 2009 she delivered the keynote speech to the Playwrights’ Guild of Canada. Linda was the Creative Fellow at Edinburgh University’s Institute of Advanced Studies in Humanities in 2011, where she and the late Prof Susan Manning published their Conversation: Gathering Uncertainties.

Octavio Solis is a playwright and director whose works Alicia’s Miracle, Se Llama Cristina, John Steinbeck’s The Pastures of Heaven, Ghosts of the River, Quixote, Lydia, June in a Box, Lethe, Marfa Lights, Gibraltar, The Ballad of Pancho and Lucy, The 7 Visions of Encarnación, Bethlehem, Dreamlandia, El Otro, Man of the Flesh, Prospect, El Paso Blue, Santos & Santos, and La Posada Mágica have been mounted at the California Shakespeare Theatre, Mark Taper Forum, Yale Repertory Theatre, the Oregon Shakespeare Festival, the Denver Center for the Performing Arts, the Dallas Theater Center, the Magic Theatre, Intersection for the Arts, South Coast Repertory Theatre, the San Diego Repertory Theatre, the San Jose Repertory Theatre, Shadowlight Productions, the Venture Theatre in Philadelphia, Latino Chicago Theatre Company, Boston Court and Kitchen Dog Theatre, the New York Summer Play Festival, Teatro Vista in Chicago, El Teatro Campesino, the Undermain Theatre in Dallas, Thick Description, Campo Santo, the Imua Theatre Company in New York, and Cornerstone Theatre. Solis has received an NEA 1995-97 Playwriting Fellowship, the Roger L. Stevens award from the Kennedy Center, the Will Glickman Playwright Award, a production grant from the Kennedy Center Fund for New American Plays, the 1998 TCG/NEA Theatre Artists in Residence Grant, the 1998 McKnight Fellowship grant from the Playwrights Center in Minneapolis, and the National Latino Playwriting Award for 2003. He is the recipient of the 2000-2001 National Theatre Artists Residency Grant from TCG and the Pew Charitable Trust, the United States Artists Fellowship for 2011 and the 2104 Pen Center USA Award for Drama. Solis is a Thornton Wilder Fellow for the MacDowell Colony, New Dramatists alum and member of the Dramatists Guild.
Nina's award winning scenic and costume designs have been seen nationally and internationally with such companies as American Conservatory Theater, California Shakespeare Theater, San Jose Repertory Theatre, Aurora Theatre Company, San Francisco Mime Troupe, Z Space, Word for Word, and The Jewish Theatre. She is also a proud company member at Shotgun Players in Berkeley, California. Recent awards include the Arty Award, multiple SFBACC awards, and a Broadway World San Francisco Award. She holds a bachelors degree in both marine biology (UC Santa Cruz) and fine art (FIT, NYC) and received her masters degree in scenic design with a costume design secondary from San Francisco State University.
Joseph Kent is an award-winning New York and San Francisco architect who lives and works in San Miguel De Allende, Mexico. With Taylor Korobow, Joseph owns and runs San Miguel's Stray Dog Presents a theatre production company for which he functions as executive producer and scenographer.
Cristy Kilkeary trained at the Northern Rivers Conservatorium of Arts in Lismore, Australia. As a dancer, choreographer, instructor and community arts coordinator, Cristy has worked with such companies as the Northern Rivers Performing Arts, Australian Arts Council, Dance Dynamics, Young Dances, Links to Learning, Mantis Dance Theatre, New Dance Studios (Amsterdam), Chasse Dance Studios (Amsterdam) and numerous schools and youth organizations, she has also trained and studied with Simon Adams (Playspace Inc., Spaghetti Circus - Australia), Susan Flynn (English National Ballet), Michael Hennessy (Sydney Dance Company), Daniella Finenauer (Sassy Salsa - Australia), Donna Ahmadi (Pilobolus - USA, Mantis Dance Theatre), Jen Murray (Kokoro Dance – Canada), Eddie Kay (DV8 – Scotland), Nick Power (Stalker - Australia), Morganics (Australia), Gerard Veltre (Phunktional Arts Company, Le Danse – Australia), Samantha Beers (Whole Body Wisdom – USA), Esther Nederpelt (Amsterdam), Bart Sluis (Amsterdam). Cristy's performance work- with an emphasis on the theatre/dance hybrid - has toured regional Australia. She currently teaches at Chasse Dance Studios and is the Community and Performing Arts Leader at the Amsterdam International Community School as coordinator of community and performance projects.
ERIKA CHONG SCHUCH
Erika Chong Shuch is a choreographer and director whose original work has been commissioned and supported by Intersection for the Arts, Berkeley Rep, Yerba Buena, Dancers’ Group, deYoung Museum, ACT’s New Works Program, and in Korea: Mullae Art Space, ChangMu Company and Daejeon Metropolitan Company. Performance and choreography credits include: Ariel (The Tempest, Cal Shakes, 2012, Falstaff choreography award) and Titania (Midsummer, Cal Shakes 2014). Erika was nominated for a Helen Hayes Award in choreography for Conference of the Birds at the Folger/Washington DC, is a recipient of the Gerbode Foundation’s Emerging Choreographer’s Award, and was a guest choreographer for Liz Lerman’s Dance Exchange (Corcoran Gallery, Washington DC). Directing credits include: Associate Director for The Gift of Nothing at the Kennedy Center (2014), Lily’s Revenge, by Taylor Mac, (Magic Theatre, 2011) and God’s Ear, by Jenny Schwartz (Shotgun Players, 2010). Upcoming projects include: directing Eurydice by Sarah Ruhl (Shotgun Players, 2015), creating new works for Volti choir and Kitka Women’s Vocal Ensemble, and creating For You, a series of works for audiences of 12 at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts, SF. Erika is currently working with CIIS (SF) and the University of Chichester’s (UK) Theater Dept. to launch a new SF based MFA is devised performance.
Trained at the Northeastern University in Boston and University of Washington, Elena leads instruction in movement (Suzuki and Viewpoints) and stage combat with such companies as California Shakespeare Theater, Commonwealth Shakespeare, Shotgun Players, Coyote Central, Seattle Shakespeare, San Francisco Shakespeare Festival, Pacific Repertory Theatre, PlayGround (Company Member) as well as private instruction nationally.
